A Day in the Life of an Intern at Greenpoint Public Library

Mackenzie Lerman and Shelda Z.

Overview

Interning at Greenpoint Public Library has been a hands-on, eye-opening experience. Under the mentorship of Shelda Z., I've had the chance to dive into the more creative and public-facing aspects of library work. From contributing to workshops to shaping the library’s atmosphere, every task feels meaningful and impactful.

The Environment

My day typically begins after school, when I head to the library to meet Shelda for a quick check-in. We discuss the tasks ahead, and I get the opportunity to ask questions and share ideas. Shelda has been a fantastic mentor, encouraging me to think creatively while guiding me through the complexities of library work. Even when I'm not there, I know Shelda is busy preparing for upcoming events or library themes, keeping the space dynamic and ever-evolving.

Teen Time and Workshops

A significant part of my internship involves designing workshops and helping to develop the teen calendar. Every week brings something new—whether it’s preparing for an event, researching ideas, or setting up for the next big activity. It's incredibly rewarding to see my contributions come to life and make a real impact on the community.

I've worked on brainstorming interactive workshops aimed at teens, focusing on making them engaging, educational, and fun. This experience has taught me the nuances of creating events that resonate with the audience and foster a sense of connection and learning.

Teen Space: My Favorite Project

One of my most exciting projects has been helping decorate the teen space for spring with origami elements like butterflies, cranes, and flowers. It's fulfilling to know that my work is creating a more inviting and inspiring environment for young readers. Watching the space come together and knowing I contributed to its transformation is truly rewarding.

Learning the Library World

Beyond the creative tasks, my internship has provided insight into the inner workings of a library. I've learned about event planning, resource management, and how libraries serve their communities in ways I hadn't fully understood before. This experience has shown me that being a librarian is about more than managing books; it’s about creating a space for connection, learning, and growth.

Looking Ahead

As I continue my internship, I'm excited for the challenges and opportunities ahead. The creative work I’ve done is just one aspect of library life, and I’m eager to deepen my understanding of the field. Every day at Greenpoint Public Library brings something new, and I’m grateful for the chance to contribute to such a dynamic and welcoming space.

This internship has been more than just a learning experience, it’s a chance to make a tangible difference in the community, and I’m thankful for Shelda’s mentorship and the opportunity to be part of something meaningful.
