Volunteering with CARE (Cycle Alliance for Reproductive Equity) is one of the most rewarding experiences in my life. Through this organization, I’ve had the opportunity to support the fight against period poverty, a struggle that often goes unseen but affects so many people. Every time I sort feminine hygiene products, count inventory, or prepare bags for CARE kits, I feel like I’m making a real impact. This work isn’t just about handing out pads or tampons, it’s about promoting dignity, health, and support for those who need it.
My involvement with CARE has included a variety of hands-on tasks. I’ve been responsible for counting and organizing products to ensure every care kit is complete. I’ve also helped stamp and assemble the bags that will be distributed to people in need. One of the most rewarding parts of this experience has been having the opportunity to learn how to sew reusable cloth pads. handmade pads provide a sustainable option for those who might not always have. knowing I have access to disposable products, makes me prideful knowing they’ll make a real difference in someone’s life.
What drives me the most is one of the more meaningful connections I have to this issue. I got my first period at age 11, I didn’t have the resources or support I needed. I remember feeling confused, embarrassed, and completely unprepared. No one should have to experience that kind of isolation. By volunteering with CARE, I’m helping to make sure that others get the help and support I didn’t have. It’s a way for me to turn a painful memory into something empowering and positive.
Being a cycle alliance intern has opened my eyes to the broader issues surrounding menstrual equity. Period poverty is more than just a lack of products; it’s a barrier to education, self-esteem, and health. Everyone deserves access to safe, reliable menstrual care, and the ability to talk about their needs without shame.
Through this work, I’ve gained practical skills and a deeper sense of purpose. I’ve learned that even small contributions, like sewing a pad or packing a kit can have a powerful ripple effect. I’m proud to be part of this movement and look forward to seeing how it continues to grow and evolve.
