author talks BPL Presents exhibitions Moomin Exhibition

Join us for a guided tour of our newest exhibition, Tove Jansson and the Moomins: The Door Is Always Open, followed by a film screening of The Summer Book.
The author’s niece, Sophia Jansson, will lead an intimate tour of the exhibition, explores the queer Finnish author’s impact on children’s literature and social-emotional learning through her beloved Moomin characters, bold political cartoons and reflective adult literature. Sophia Jansson will share reflections on the legacy of the Moomins internationally and within  Tove’s world. The Door Is Always Open offers a rare opportunity in the U.S. to step into Jansson’s creative universe through immersive installations, archival materials, multilingual editions of her books, and public programming for all ages.

Following the walk-through will be a screening of The Summer Book (2024). Set in the idyllic Finnish coastal landscape, this film adaptation of Tove Jansson's most beloved novel from 1972 depicts the evolving, magical, and lifelike story of Sophia and her grandmother as they spend their summer on a small island, grieving the passing of Sophia's mother.

The exhibition and this program is presented by Brooklyn Public Library in partnership with Moomin Characters, Moomin Arabia, the creator of the world-famous Moomin mugs that have become cherished collectables, Finnair, one of the world's oldest airlines, and the City of Tampere, home of the world's only Moomin Museum.
