Ken Siegelman's Brooklyn Poetry Outreach featuring Jose Irizarry.
"Jose Irizarry, known to family and friends as Joe, has been writing poetry for about four years. He began writing after a moment of reflection during a George Floyd protest. A story he knows all too well, as a child listening to the stories of police abuse, as family members were assaulted, in the name of justice, it was a common occurrence, an encounter with the law could leave you dead or maimed, it was just in the ethos of his world."
"Writing about these issues has invigorated something inside now digging into his past, looking at all the complexities of minority groups and how it's so much more complicated than just the good guys and the bad guys. Since then, he has taught himself the art form. For the last four years, his writing has been therapeutic, reflective, and empowering. He hopes to someday write a book, but for now, he will continue to explore this art form and enjoy the ride."
