artist talks BPL Presents celebrate heritage Civic Engagement poetry

As the culminating public program for the current exhibition Joe Namy: Heavy With Love, we welcome you for an evening hosted by artist Joe Namy, exhibition Co-Curator Fawz Kabra, and special guests Maya Berry and Marwa Helal, with live poetry reading and discussion centered on the ways that creativity supports us all in citizenship, activism, and collectivity in the face of systemic violence.

Maya Berry is Executive Director of the Arab American Institute (AAI), a non-profit, nonpartisan, national civil rights advocacy organization founded to nurture and encourage direct participation in our political and civic life to mobilize a strong, educated, and empowered Arab American community. She previously worked at AAI, establishing its first government relations department, which she led for five years before becoming Legislative Director for House Minority Whip David Bonior, where she managed the Congressman's legislative strategy and developed policies on international relations, human rights, immigration, civil rights and liberties, and trade. With a deep knowledge of public policy making, she helped expand AAI’s work on combatting hate crime, protecting the rights of securitized communities, strengthening our democracy, and advocating for data equity, including the creation of a new Middle East and North Africa (MENA) category. Berry serves as the Co-Chair of the Hate Crime Task Force at the Leadership Conference for Civil and Human Rights and on the board of Public Citizen.

Marwa Helal is the author of Ante body (Nightboat Books, 2022), Invasive species (Nightboat Books, 2019), and the chapbook I AM MADE TO LEAVE I AM MADE TO RETURN (No, Dear, 2017). Helal is the winner of a 2021 Whiting Award and has been awarded fellowships from the Jerome Foundation, NYFA/NYSCA, Poets House, and Cave Canem among others. Born in Al Mansurah, Egypt, she lives in the United States.

Joe Namy is an artist, composer, and educator often working collaboratively through sound, video, performance, and sculpture. His solo exhibition, Heavy With Love, is on view at Central Library through October 12, 2024

Fawz Kabra, is Curator and Director of Brief Histories, New York and the Co-Curator of Joe Namy: Heavy With Love
