Genealogy Workshop: Researching Your Family's Roots
Are you curious about researching your family's history, but don't know where to start? Have you watched television programs about exploring your roots, and wondered what a deep dive into your own family history might reveal? Have you always wanted to find the historical evidence behind the family stories you grew up hearing?
Join us on Tuesday, July 29th at 5:30pm at the Macon Library for an introductory workshop on researching your family's history. The workshop will be led by Stacey Bell, President of the Jean Sampson Scott New York Chapter of the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society. Stacey will share the sources and methods that professional genealogists use to trace their ancestry and identify their family's history in the historical record.
Center for Brooklyn historian Dominique Jean-Louis will be on hand to provide an overview of how genealogical research makes important contributions to the field of history, including history exhibitions like Trace/s: Family History Research and the Legacy of Slavery in Brooklyn, which will be open at the Center for Brooklyn History through August 30th, 2025.
This program takes place in Macon’s Heritage Center, and space is limited. Please register only if you are planning to attend.
The Center for Brooklyn History will be holding additional genealogy workshops throughout the library branches this summer- please check our website for an updated list of dates and locations.
Trace/s is supported as part of the Dutch Culture USA FUTURE 400 program by the Consulate General of the Netherlands in New York, and by the Alvin and Fanny B. Thalheimer Foundation in memory of Bill Coleman.
