book discussion
Join Flatbush Library's monthly book club for a chance to meet your neighbors and dive into some great books. We read a variety of nonfiction and contemporary fiction.
For August, we'll be reading How to say Babylon : A Memoir by Safiya Sinclair. On multiple best-of lists for 2023, this is the author’s story of her struggle to break free of her strict Rastafarian upbringing and her father's control and paranoia. Struggling under the rigidity of her father's beliefs, Safiya finds solace in books and poetry. As Safiya’s voice grows, lyrically and poetically, she must reckon with the culture that initially nourished but ultimately sought to silence her. The book is a reckoning with patriarchy and tradition, and the legacy of colonialism in Jamaica. Rich in lyricism and language only a poet could evoke, How to Say Babylon is a universal story of a woman finding her own power.
