AN OFFICIAL 2025 BROOKLYN BOOK FESTIVAL BOOKEND EVENT

BROADWAY BOOKS NEW YORK PREMIERE: join us for a screening of the pilot episode of Broadway Books, a sitcom set in New York City, about an independent bookstore struggling to survive using increasingly desperate measures.

Starring Lauren Servideo, Ruby McCollister, Nick Naney, Eric Yates and Carlos Dengler, the pilot follows the team as they try to raise the numbers for that night’s Malcolm Gladwell reading. (Meanwhile, Nick accuses Pierre of not having read his staff picks). 

Q&A following the screening with writer/director Carianne King, Abbie Jones (producer), Carlos Dengler (cast), and writer Darcey Steinke

 

PARTICIPANTS

Carianne King

Carianne King (writer/director/creator)

Carianne is a writer and director of comedic films and brand content. Her short “Trollify” was named a Best Comedy Short of the Month by Vulture/New York Magazine and her short “Scumbag” won the Audience Choice award at the Iron Mule Comedy Festival. Carianne received an MFA in writing from Columbia University and worked in fashion for many years as a writer and creative director.

Carlos Dengler

Carlos Dengler (cast)

Carlos Dengler has performed in local and regional theaters like Lincoln Center Theater, Dorset Theater Festival and Fringe New York where he performed his one-person show Homo Sapiens Interruptus in 2016. He has published essays in the Tablet, Mars Review of Books, n + 1 and in the anthology New Jersey Fan Club. Carlos directed his first short called Iowa (2018) and served as screenwriter, editor and composer for the film, as well as performed as the lead. As a film composer, he has scored the motion picture drama Sam’s World (2023) and the animation shorts series, Love Letters to the Subway (2023). He has recorded six albums of New Age compositions from 2022 to 2024. He is a cofounder of and performed as the bass player and keyboardist for the band Interpol until 2010. He was also a professional DJ in the 2000s and performed at Coachella and Lollapalooza. He has a BA in Philosophy (NYU, 1999) and an MFA in Acting (NYU, 2015).

Darcey Steinke

Darcey Steinke (Q&A host)

Darcey Steinke is the author of three memoirs, most recently  Flash Count Diary and the forthcoming This Is the Door and five novels: Sister Golden Hair, Milk, Jesus Saves, Suicide Blonde, and Up Through the Water. Her books have been translated into ten languages, and her nonfiction has appeared widely. Her web story “Blindspot” was a part of the 2000 Whitney Biennial. She has been both a Henry Hoyns and a Stegner Fellow. Her work has been long listed for the Independent Book Prize and the French Arles Author Award. She has held many residencies, most recently at Iceland's Grondal House.  She has taught at the  Columbia University School of the Arts, New York University, Princeton, and the American University of Paris. She lives with her husband in Brooklyn.

Abbie Jones

Abbie Jones (producer)

Abbie Jones is a producer born and based out of NYC. she has produced for renowned brands such as Vogue, GQ, HBO, Diesel, Converse, and Planned Parenthood. Her notable projects include music videos for Soccer Mommy (directed by Alex Ross Perry), Michelle, H.E.R., and Arcade Fire. Recently, she produced the feature film Lockjaw, directed by Sabrina Greco, which secured a U.S. in Progress post-production grant from Poland’s American Film Festival and premiered at Slamdance.
