BPL Presents exhibitions

Join Franklin Furnace Director Emerita and celebrated artist Martha Wilson for this second Artist Books in Action program as part of the exhibition Franklin Furnace: Performance is Public at Brooklyn Public Library. She and three guest panelists—Sabrina Jones, Gail Rubini and Conrad Gleber—take  us through the ways performance and visual artists use the medium of artist books to invent humor, satire and parody.

About the Presenters:

Sabrina Jones writes, illustrates and edits comics and graphic novels on social justice and radical history. She began creating comics for World War 3 Illustrated and went on to edit numerous issues, including the upcoming “Shameless Feminists.”

Gail Rubini and Conrad Gleber  are artists, designers, grandparents and former professors working, teaching and administrating various projects in the fields of photography, artist books, digital prints, public new media art and exhibitions. Together with Jim Snitzer in 1976, they founded Chicago Books offset print shop to publish artists’ books and experiments in printing. Recent public art projects include My Alaska,Too, a 27 foot media installation piece in Anchorage, Alaska and Hava Good One, an interactive video sign in Ft. Myers, Florida. Past exhibition projects include: designX: critical reflections, an exhibition, website and publication discussing the role of design in our emerging information age culture; The Future of the Book of the Future, a series of exhibitions, publications and an award winning web site that examined the future forms of the book and the dissemination of ideas; and Personal Media – Public Good, 5 short video and flash pieces designed for cell phone delivery that explored ways mobile media interaction can be used to enhance the social quality of life.
