Dearest Bookworms,

The Coney Island Mermaid Day Parade is this weekend! A quintessential Brooklyn Experience, want to know what else is a quintessential Brooklyn Experience? Find the closest Brooklyn Public Library branch and checking out some books!

Below is a list of Mermaid books to get us in the spirit:

  1. Mermaids never drown : tales to dive for  The second book in the Untold Legends series, this is an anthology of short stories that feature mermaids
  2. In the name of the mermaid princess. Vol 1 by Yoshino Fumikawa In a society hostile to diversity, can mermaid princess Mio be true to herself? In the classic fairy tale, a mermaid princess gives up her special abilities for love. What happens if she doesn't? Princess Mio is betrothed to Prince Chika. However, they've never met, and he doesn't know her secret--she's a mermaid! When her tutor, Yuri, takes her out of the castle to meet her subjects, Mio begins to accept her true self. But Yuri has a secret too... And when Mio tells her father, the king, she wants to live life openly as a mermaid, he punishes her. How can she stay true to herself?
  3. The sea in you by Jessica Sheron In a dark fantasy retelling of "The Little Mermaid," a young girl barely escapes an encounter with a deadly mermaid, and the two quickly form a romantic bond that threatens all of their social ties on land and beneath the sea.
  4. My salty Mary by Cynthia Hand Don't call this mermaid "little" call her "captain," unless you want to walk the plank. Mary is in love with the so-called prince of Charles Town, except he doesn't love her back. Which is inconvenient. Since she's a mermaid, being brokenhearted means she'll -- poof! -- turn into sea-foam. But instead, Mary finds herself pulled out of the sea and up onto a pirate ship. To survive, she joins them. But Mary isn't willing to just sing the yo-ho-hos. She wants the pirate life, all of it, and she's ready to make a splash ... by becoming captain. But when Blackbeard dies suddenly, Mary has a chance to become so much more: Pirate King ... or Queen. She won't let anyone stop her -- not Blackbeard's cute son, not her best friend from back under the sea who's having a bit too much fun with his new legs, and certainly not everyone who says she can't be a pirate just because she's a girl. She may not be the best man for the job, but she'll definitely prove that she's worth her salt.
  5. Soul of the deep by Natasha Bowen When signs of the eight ajogun begin to appear, Simi teams up with the corrupt trickster god Esu to stop the demon warlords before they enter the human realm and ruin humankind. This is the second in a series, the first book is Skin of the sea

Happy Reading Little Merpeoples
