Audiobooks meet readers at a cross section of ages, literacy skills and/or physical mobilities. This summer, line up some good ones for when you’re outside (say, browsing the branches) or enjoying a solitary moment. Commercial audiobooks are searchable in BPL’s catalog, while accessible talking books are available for request from National Library Services here. Here are our recommendations:
For doing dishes with headphones on
Lend charm to an unremarkable domestic act.
For gardening or working with your hands
A farmer I knew listened to the Bible while weeding. Bucolic. These steady slow burners will goad your attention without detracting from it.
For a long train ride with a window seat
Here’s fiction that is profound. Look out the window as your mind catches up.
For commuting or sitting in traffic
Surrender to the you-sized space that you occupy and cannot leave. Time, famously relative, will pass more swiftly if you’re amused.
For walking in the park or on the beach
Enjoy these reflective audiobooks that last the duration of a long walk.
For roadtrips
Try a doorstopper that roughly lines up with the duration of your journey. It’s ok to develop a parasocial relationship to voice actors.
When do you find yourself listening to audiobooks the most, and what do you like to listen to? Share your comments below, or with BPL staff next time you swing by your local branch.
