Name BPL's Historic Eagle - Finalists

Central Library is holding a name contest for the bronze Eagle statue in our grand lobby—and we need your help. The sculpture came from the headquarters of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle newspaper. The records of the newspaper have been at the Library since 1957 so the Eagle is kind of special around here. Over the years, the Eagle has nested in many places. It was loaned to the Brooklyn Public Library in 1997 by the Brooklyn Historical Society, and they’ve kindly made the sculpture a permanent gift to BPL this year.

We received hundreds of creative name submissions for our Eagle! A selection team consisting of BPL staff, staff of the Brooklyn Historical Society, and members of the Brooklyn Eagles (BPL's young supporters group) have narrowed the list down to five finalists. A winner has ben selected so stay tuned for the announcement!

“A great way to remember a favorite ball team.”
“In honor of Emily Roebling, engineer of the Brooklyn Bridge.”
“Since the eagle is the national bird, I feel that the name should reflect something that the country stands for. Harmony is different voices coming together to make a new voice that reflects everyone.”
“After Raymond Ingersoll, the Brooklyn Borough President who was responsible for getting the Central Library built after the initial construction project stalled due to lack of funding.”
“Because of the inscription outside: ‘Here is enshrined the magic word that winged wonder starts.’”
