Brooklyn Public Library Spring Exhibition Season Features Original Work from 2016 BPL Artist-in-Residence

Katowitz Radin Artist-in-Residence Pat Cummings Exhibits Artwork from Renowned Children’s Book Illustrators

Brooklyn, NY—Brooklyn Public Library’s spring exhibition season opens today at Central Library with The Turn of the Page, featuring artwork from Katowitz Radin Artist-in-Residence Pat Cummings alongside illustrations by artists she has mentored—all of whom are, like Cummings herself, the creators of successful and well-known children’s picture books.

Cummings, whose work has earned the Coretta Scott King Award, the NAACP Image Award and many other honors, selected illustrations from David Ezra Stein (Interrupting Chicken), Shadra Strickland (Bird), You Byun (Dream Friends) and others for the exhibition. In addition to The Turn of the Page, Cummings’ residency will produce a variety of hands-on programs for children and public discussions designed to engage Brooklyn’s aspiring children’s book authors and illustrators.

“Brooklyn Public Library is excited to present a spring exhibition season led by an artist whose residency will illuminate the process of children’s book writing and illustration,” said Linda E. Johnson, president and CEO of Brooklyn Public Library.

Other highlights of the spring season include:

  • Acclaimed artist Garry Pierre-Pierre’s Celebrating Agwe: Paying Homage to the Vodou God of Water in Brooklyn, featuring haunting photographs of Haitian immigrants practicing their religion in the borough.
  • Ilisa Katz Rissman’s April Is the Cruelest Month, a visual diary of the artist’s relationship with her mother, with imagery that draws from T. S. Eliot’s The Wasteland.
  • An exhibition of the 30th annual Ezra Jack Keats/NYC Department of Education Bookmaking Competition winners, all of whom are New York City students in grades 3 through 12.
