Branch History
Jamaica Bay Library opened in July 1973 and is one of the more recent additions to the Brooklyn Public Library system. Situated on Seaview Avenue near the Jamaica Bay Coastal Lagoon—a stone’s throw from the ocean!—the branch offers a plethora of programming for children of all ages.
The branch location was selected after a long community planning process that began in 1966. The design, conceived by Manhattan architects Leibowitz/Badouva and Associates, won the New York Society of Architects bronze plaque for an accomplished solution to a difficult and highly constrained construction. The interior features a split-level design offering three distinct floors for collections, while the exterior offers a shaded plaza with benches perfect for enjoying a book during warm weather.
Current popular programs include Story Play on Tuesday mornings, where children interact with toys during a story time session, and a crochet program led by branch clerk Nancy Brunache.
