Participate in Hire Red Hook’s eight-week workshop series starting this April, and you can earn a stipend and MetroCards, build a professional resume, practice your interview skills, gain exclusive access to a job fair, and more!

Requirements
  • Interest in learning computer skills and improving job readiness  
  • Ability to commit to the full 8-week workshop series
  • Passing grade on a digital literacy test
  • Participation in graduation exercises, including job fair, mock interviews, and more
  • All 18+ applicants welcome! GED/HSE encouraged, but not required

Program Overview

Saturdays between April 6th and May 18th. Career fair on Thursday, May 23rd from 4-7pm.

Workshop 1 : Computer Literacy 101, Part 1 - April 6th
Over the course of this 2-week introduction to the program, we will hit the ground running and dig in to the basics of using a PC and frequently used software, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Workshop 2: Computer Literacy 101, Part 2 - April 13th
This week's workshop will build on what we learned during Week 1. What is the difference between a .doc and a PDF file? How can I save a file to different locations on my computer? You'll find out the answers to all this and more!

Workshop 3: How to Use the Internet and Digital Privacy - April 20th
What is the difference between the internet and a web browser? How does the internet actually work? How can you protect sensitive personal information when applying for jobs online? This workshop will cover the basics of navigating the internet, and give you the tools you need to knowledgeably and safely use websites of all kinds.

Workshop 4: Email Basics & Services - April 27th
Everyone will leave this workshop with a professional sounding email address, learn strategies for creating strong, safe passwords, get information about password managers such as LastPass, and successfully create draft email cover letters for job applications, including adding attachments, email signatures, and more.

Workshop 5: Free and Affordable Web Applications - May 4th
Tired of carrying around a flash drive and hitting Save every 2 minutes to make sure you haven't lost your work? In this workshop we'll cover a FREE alternative to Microsoft Office: Google Office Suite. What is cloud-based file storage? How do you use Google Drive? Find out about some of the best free web applications that are out there to make your life easier.

Workshop 6: Business and Career Library Resources, Part 1 - May 11th  
In this 2-week culmination to the program, experts from Brooklyn Public Library's Business & Career Center will be digging into resume dos and don'ts, how to write a cover letter, career resources such as Mometrix, Career Cruising, etc., the "Big 5" job search websites, and what to do before, during, and after job interviews.

Workshop 7: Business and Career Center Library Resources, Part 2 - May 18th
In this 2-week culmination to the program, experts from Brooklyn Public Library's Business & Career Center will be digging into resume dos and don'ts, how to write a cover letter, career resources such as Mometrix, Career Cruising, etc., the "Big 5" job search websites, and what to do before, during, and after job interviews.

Week 8: Graduation/Job Fair  - Thursday, May 23rd from 4-7pm
The program will culminate in a graduation, interview clothing for participants, and a career fair where job seekers would be connected directly to employers and career development programs in the community.
