Frequently Asked Questions
For kids and teens ages 17 and under who have a library card with The New York Public Library, Brooklyn Public Library, or Queens Library, any outstanding fines and fees on overdue, unreturned, and lost materials will be automatically cleared on October 19, 2017. High School students ages 18 and up are also eligible, but fines will not be cleared automatically. Eligible patrons can visit their local library where staff will waive fines on a case by case basis through November 2, 2017.
The fine amnesty only applies to fines and fees on your account as of October 19. Unreturned items due after that date accrue fines according to your library system's fine schedule. This means that items in good standing on the day of the amnesty will need to be returned by their due dates in order to avoid fines after October 19, 2017.
Materials must be returned to a Brooklyn Public Library branch. Find the nearest branch at: bklynlib.org/locations.
Returning books and materials is not required to benefit from the fine amnesty, although the libraries encourage you to bring materials back so that all New Yorkers can enjoy them.
Visit your local library and ask a staff member to look up your account and give you a new library card. Remember to bring a valid form of ID or have a parent/guardian with you. Your old card will immediately be deactivated.
When you check out, the library staff will give you a receipt. Make sure to look at it for due dates, or find them by logging in to your account online. Please return items to any location in your library system by the due dates listed. Note: There are no fines on eBooks! Talk to your librarian to find out how you can borrow one or visit: bklynlib.org/ebooks.
Eligible items can be renewed online, in person, or by calling 718.230.6700. Note that if another patron is waiting for the item, it cannot be renewed. Try to renew 1-2 days prior to the due date in case you need to bring it back.
