Taking Care: A Story of Common History

There is healing in the simple pleasures of domestic life, especially washing laundry.
It is familiar to all of us: the smell of soap and lavender, the poetry of the white linens drying in the sun, the sound of the iron gliding on silk, the feeling of accomplishment before a pile of perfectly pressed shirts, the crisp, white sheets.
Why do we have this in common?
During her performance, artist Anne Mourier invites you to participate in these simple acts of washing white linens by hand, drying them in the sun, and ironing them with care. She wants to find out if these small acts can connect us all. Could our society begin healing through the simple act of Taking Care of things and of each other?
Biography
Anne Mourier is a French-born, Brooklyn-based artist investigating the notion of home. Working in photography, sculpture, installation, and performance, her interdisciplinary practice explores cleaning as an analysis of the family construct and the archetypal representation of women. Her delicate and poetic works tell and collect stories, may they be hers, yours, her mother’s, or those of iconic religious figures, and are an invitation to both an introspective voyage and a social dialogue.
Anne Mourier had her first solo show in 2013 at the Glass House @ The Invisible Dog Art Center, which she designed to host her work. She has also exhibited internationally, including Marys in Venice, Italy, during the 2015 Biennale; Maries in 2016, and Alma Mater in 2017, in Rots, France.
This September, Mourier has been invited by the Brooklyn Public Library for the second iteration of her performance Taking Care, and in October she is returning to The Invisible Dog Art Center with her largest installation yet, Elevation. Mourier is represented by Muriel Guépin Gallery in New York City, and Sohn Fine Art in Lenox, Massachusetts.
