Luminaris

Recommended ages: All Ages

Argentina
Animation, Juan Pablo Zaramella, 2010, 7 min.

If you’ve been sitting around your house, staring at the ceiling wondering how lightbulbs are made, this brilliant short, Luminaris will surely illuminate you! In a world controlled and timed by light, one man has a plan that could change destiny.

Luminaris holds the Guinness world record for short film with the most festival awards – so you won’t want to miss it!

Watch: https://vimeo.com/24051768

Talking Points:

  • We’ve shared some other films in our newsletter that utilize stop motion animation. Luminaris is made with a kind of stop motion animation called PIXILATION. Pixilation is stop motion that uses humans instead of puppets! How do you think a film like this is made?
  • Pick a scene and think about how the fimmaker animated it. What do you think may have been challenging? What creative problem solving did the filmmaker use?

Get Creative: TED-Ed made a great video explaining how pixilation works! Check it out here and then make your own pixilation film! The video is made by three NYICFF alumni so you know it’s going to be good!

Major support provided by New York Life Foundation, the 2020 city-wide sponsor for the Summer Reading Program. Lead support for Brooklyn Public Library's Summer Reading 2020 program is provided by the National Grid Foundation. The program is supported by Con Edison and Macy's.
