Silent Movie Matinee: Anthony Asquith: Crossing Boundaries
A Cottage on Dartmoor (1929) 87 minutes UK/Sweden
Today’s film was produced at the end of the silent-era and provides an example of how far silent films had evolved in creating a cinematic-language that was fully-visual, and emotional, at the moment that sound, and talking-pictures, were about to replace them. It is a noir-ish thriller that tells the story of Sally, a manicurist (Norah Baring), and Joe, a barber (Uno Henning), who both work at the same shop. Joe feels a romantic interest that Sally does not share, but when Sally shows interest in a farmer from Dartmoor (Hans Adelbert Schlettow), a jealousy begins to emerge that Joe cannot seem to control.
