book discussion

Please join us on August 25, at 3:00pm, in person, in the Trustees Room, to participate in the Short Stories Discussion Group. As Dhumketu said: “The short story is that which, like a flash of lightning, pierces right through while establishing a viewpoint; without any other machinations, simply gestures with a finger to awaken dormant emotions; creates an entirely new imaginary world around the reader. The novel says whatever it wants. The short story, by rousing the imagination and emotions, only alludes to or provides a spark of whatever it wants to say. This is why the writer of the short story needs a reader who is impressible, emotional, swift and intelligent; to such a reader, he will be forever in debt.” In short, a short story is not only a pleasure to read but can also enrich our lives in more ways than words can say. Hope you can join us.

The August date and selection are as follows:

  • Aug 25 (What We Talk About When We Talk About Love, by Raymond Carver)

Copy of the story is available at the Languages and Literature reference desk.
