Sew Brooklyn: Create Your Own Underwear
Join FABSCRAP and Third Date Lingerie for an evening learning the basics for you to feel confident sewing your own knickers! Participants will learn the basic techniques necessary to sew basic lingerie items while creating a thong garment. The techniques translate to sewing any knicker pattern you may select in the future. Keeping existing lingerie supplies in use and out of landfills is critical because most are non-biodegradable and not recyclable. Learn the basics to confidently sew your own unique, custom, and (most importantly!) sustainable knickers! This class has limited spots, so register here!
This workshop will introduce you to: - selecting lingerie materials- working with different fabrics, lace, and elastic- applying picot and foldover elastic- sewing an enclosed crotch gusset
Supply list:
- Stretch 2.5-4” lace in a length at least your hip measurement
- Picot and/or foldover elastic (2-3 yards)
-100% cotton for crotch gusset (12” by 6”) (great use for an old cotton shirt!)
- Stretch material or lace for front panel and gusset outside layer (1/4 yard) if using lace it should be at least 22mm wide and can be stretch or non-stretch *note* non-stretch lace may not be ideal for those with tactile sensitivity)
2 machines will be set up for use:
- One using white thread- One using black thread
If using lace for the front panel - 12” x 12” stretch fabric or power mesh for the backside of the thong
If you are bringing your own sewing machine and want to use a custom thread color, please make sure the thread is 100% polyester (cotton thread is not ideal for lingerie).
