Culture Pass

Join the Wyckoff Museum staff as they explore the art and science of natural dyes using materials from the garden or grocery store. We’ll touch on textile history, the pH scale, and color theory as we guide you through the steps to dye clothes at home!

Materials Needed:

  • One or two large cooking pots, stirring spoons, and access to a stove and tap water, plus a couple of large mixing bowls (optional)
  • Cutting board and knife to cut up cabbage
  • Somewhere to hang your dyed fabric out to dry
  • One red cabbage
  • A few tablespoons of powdered turmeric
  • Optional: about a tablespoon of baking soda
  • Optional: about a tablespoon of vinegar (any kind)
  • Optional: some rubber bands
  • Optional: tongs to fish fabric out of dye bath (big spoons will also work!)
  • Any clean, dry, light-colored fabric made from a natural fiber (cotton, linen, silk, or wool)
