Music Production at the Library: Sampling
music
podcasting and audio recording
Learn the basics of sampling, right here at the Brooklyn Public Library. Going back to the beginning, we will sample a vinyl record, search the internet for samples, and create a brand new sample using a microphone. Then, using free software, we will learn various techniques to manipulate and play with our samples. We will learn to use our samples in beats, textures, and otherworldly sounds -- splicing and reversing, layering, shifting, creating new instruments, and transforming everyday sounds into music.
Carlos Hernandez is a musician, producer and audio engineer from Brooklyn, NY. With over 20 years experience running studio sessions. His band, Ava Luna, has been described by The New York Times as “...post-soul... pulsating from one energy to another, suggesting art project and ritual.” And his 2022 solo album was described by Pitchfork as “an excellent solo album of minimalist funk and R&B pared down to its barest essence.”
