Music Production at the Library: Mixing and Mastering
Learn the basics of mixing and mastering, right here at Brooklyn Public Library. This workshop will cover the fundamentals of mixing and mastering at a beginner level, including balancing, panning, EQ, compression, saturation, and sonic effects such as reverb and delay. We will sit together and go through the mixing process step by step, mixing a song from scratch using Garageband. Learn to maximize the quality of your songs by understanding the way sounds are combined, and learn to overcome some common mixing challenges like muddiness, distortion, loudness, and clarity.
Up to 15 laptops with Garageband will be provided. First come, first served; sign up at the Info Commons Reference Desk 30 minutes in advance of the session. If you have access to a MacBook yourself, you are welcome to bring it.
Carlos Hernandez is a musician, producer and audio engineer from Brooklyn, NY. With over 20 years experience running recording sessions, Carlos has become a go-to producer for NYC underground music, working with artists such as Princess Nokia, Palehound, L’Rain, Juan Wauters, Frankie Cosmos, Rachika Nayar, Nappy Nina, Eartheater, and many more.
His band, Ava Luna, has been described by the New York Times as “...post-soul... pulsating from one energy to another, suggesting art project and ritual.” And his 2022 solo album was described by Pitchfork as “an excellent solo album of minimalist funk and R&B pared down to its barest essence.”
