Learn the basics of synthesizers and electronic sounds, right here at Brooklyn Public Library. This workshop will cover the basics of how to use a synth. We will discuss oscillators and sonic generators, modulators, LFO’s, filters and envelopes. We will use computer software, a keyboard, and a physical, analog synth to create electronic music. We will also discuss effects, arpeggiators, sequencers, and more techniques, with demonstrations.

There will be an opportunity to record your own musical creations. Up to 15 laptops with Garageband will be provided. First come, first served; sign up at the Info Commons Reference Desk 30 minutes in advance of the session. If you have access to a MacBook yourself, you are welcome to bring it.

Carlos Hernandez is a musician, producer and audio engineer from Brooklyn, NY. With over 20 years experience running studio sessions, Carlos has become a go-to producer for NYC underground music, working with artists such as Princess NokiaPalehoundJuan WautersFrankie Cosmos, Rachika NayarNappy NinaEartheater, and many more.

His band, Ava Luna, has been described by the New York Times as “...post-soul... pulsating from one energy to another, suggesting art project and ritual.” And his 2022 solo album was described by Pitchfork as “an excellent solo album of minimalist funk and R&B pared down to its barest essence.”
