Meet the Authors: Conversations with Chinese Writers in New York, 3rd in Series: A Dialogue with Poet, Critic and Translator Wang Jiaxin 对话纽约中文作家第三讲： 对话诗人王家新

Dyker Library is excited to host the most prominent Chinese poet, literary critic, and translator Mr. Wang Jiaxin in the third installment of the series of Conversations with Chinese Writers in New York at 2pm on Saturday October 28, 2023 in the library's meeting room.  Mr. Wang will share his unique perspectives on his Chinese poetry writing, poetry translation work and literary criticism. Mr. Wang has a prolific writing career and has been acclaimed as the representative of Chinese Intellectuals Writing.  His poetry demonstrates the gravity of in-depth thinking about history and individual lives with an emphasis on the power of inner awareness.

Mr. Wang will give a 30-minute talk about “The Literature of Immigration and My Own Overseas Writing Journey” before engaging the panelists and the audience in a conversation about his decades-spanning career.  The audience will get a chance to look back at Mr. Wang’s journey—from being sent to toil in the countryside before the great opportunity of studying at Wuhan University in 1977, earning the title of Editor at the prestigious Poetry magazine, and moving into professorship at Renmin University for almost 20 years.  Then there is his literary journey, recording the world and humankind through poetry inspired by his experience.  His keen observation of contemporary Chinese poetry and his musings on the responsibility of poets in this challenging world offer insightful advice on how the readers can appreciate the form and create their own poems.  Two other panelists and the audience will discuss Wang's poem Tarkovsky's Tree.

Both panelists are from Long Island.  Mr. Jian Wang had his poetry collection The Stranger  published in 2023.  Mr. Aiguo Ying is the author of the poetry collection I Have Finally Lost the Freedom of Getting Lost among other books. This event will be conducted in Chinese with English interpretation for critical segments.  A Q&A suite will be launched in the fashion of By the Book Interview, and we encourage the audience to be actively engaged.  A recording of the program will be uploaded to BPLvideos (https://www.youtube.com/BPLvideos) for public viewing within 48 hours of the event.

Author Biography 作者简介

Wang Jiaxin was born in 1957 in Hubei Province and studied Chinese literature at Wuhan University. In 1985 he moved to Beijing and began working as an editor for the influential Poetry journal. Since 2006 he has been a Professor of literature at Renmin University of China. He retired from teaching in 2021, but has been even more active in poetry scenes and events in both China and the U.S. Wang has a prolific career and published numerous books of poetry, translation work and essays of criticism as well as edited poetry anthologies. His published books include Poetry by Wang Jiaxin; Darkening Mirror, Tarkovsky’s Tree, A Meeting of Man and the World; Poems Without a Hero, Selected Poetry and Writings of Paul Celan, Poems from Modern European and American Poets; Chinese Poetry in the 1990s, ... etc. Wang Jiaxin’s writing witnesses and records the journey of contemporary Chinese poetry evolution. His poetry and criticism, as well as his translation work have exerted profound influence and garnered attention from international communities of modern poetry and Chinese literature studies. He has been invited frequently to attend international literary festivals and hold readings in different countries. Wang has received various domestic and international poetry awards, including the inaugural Ai Qing Poetry Award in China. He has also been a poet-in-residence in several countries, such as The International Writing Program at the University of Iowa (2013), Dutch Literary Foundation in Amsterdam as Poet-in-Residence (2022).  王家新：诗人、批评家、翻译家，1957年生于湖北省丹江口市，1977年考入武汉大学中文系，1985年开始在北京担任《诗刊》编辑，2006年起被中国人民大学文学院聘任为教授、博士生导师。他于2021年退休，但一直活跃于中美两地的各种诗歌活动。王家新著作丰厚，有诗集《王家新的诗》《塔可夫斯基的树》等，诗论随笔集《人与世界的相遇》等，译诗集《灰烬的光辉：保罗·策兰诗选》《聋哑剧院之夜》（伊利亚·卡明斯基著）《山中之门：吉恩·瓦伦汀诗选》，以及《中国诗歌：九十年代备忘录》《现代欧美诗歌流派诗选》《中外现代诗歌导读》等编著数十种。王家新的创作贯穿了中国当代诗歌四十年来的历程，其创作、批评和翻译均产生广泛影响，并受到国际诗坛和汉学界关注。他曾多次应邀参加一些国际文学和国际诗歌节活动，并在欧美一些大学讲学、朗诵，做驻校诗人，包括2013年参加衣阿华国际写作计划。曾获多种国内外诗歌奖、诗学批评奖和翻译奖，包括2023年首届“艾青诗歌奖”等。

Jian Wang: Mr. Wang was born in  Hubei in the 1960s and and started publishing poetry works by the name Chushi as a college student in the 80s. He was an active participant in the poetry movement of that era and became a renowned poet in Wuhan campuses. He became an entrepreneur in the 90s, but returned to poetry writing around 2010 and has since published in various Chinese and international poetry periodicals. His poems have been selected into a litany of anthologies. His poetry collection The Stranger was published by Guangxi Normal University Publishing House earlier this year and has been well accepted by the critics. He has been the chief editor of The Poetry Anthology of Mountain Lakes in Zhongnan University of Economics and Law since 2018. He currently lives in Beijing and Long Island, New York.  王键：1960年代出生于中国湖北，20世纪80年代开始用笔名楚石发表诗歌作品，发起诗歌活动，为武汉著名校园诗人。90年代停笔投身实业成为一名企业家，2010年回归诗歌写作，作品见诸中外诗歌刊物，入选多种诗歌选本。出版个人诗集《异乡人》(广西师范大学出版社)。2018年起担任中南财经大学诗歌读本《山湖集》主编。现居北京和纽约长岛。

Aiguo Ying：Mr. Ying was born in Jiangsu, China and currently resides in Syosset, NY with his wife and three children.  He has published a novel A Woman Named Zhiqiu,  a collection of short stories All Beautiful People Have Come to New York , as well as a poetry collection I Have Finally Lost the Freedom of Getting Lost.  应帆：江苏淮安人，现居纽约长岛。著作包括长篇小说《有女知秋》，中短篇小说集《漂亮的人都来纽约了》及诗集《我终于失去了迷路的自由》。
