LitFilm 2023: Searching for Winnetou
Documentary, dir. by Drew Hayden Taylor
Canada, 2018, 44 min
The documentary explores the controversy surrounding cultural appropriation of indigenous culture in an innovative, hilarious, unnerving, yet inspiring way. For years Drew Hayden Taylor, prolific playwright and author of 30 Canadian-Indigenous novels, has noticed a high proportion of German tourists visiting Canada to look for an “Indianer” experience. Almost every one relates stories of a famous, but mythical, Apache warrior and childhood hero, Winnetou.
