LitFilm 2023: Elizabeth Bishop & the Art of Losing with Alice Quinn & director John D. Scott
dir. by John D. Scott
Canada/U.S., 2022, 84 min
The first feature-length documentary on the life and literary work of the reclusive Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Elizabeth Bishop. This mesmerizing masterpiece is framed by her renowned poem “One Art” about loss, written by the poet after a lifelong string of tragedy from her father’s death when she was an infant to the suicide of her Brazilian lover Lota. Transplanted Nova Scotia filmmaker John D. Scott foregrounds how Bishop's journey is indelibly connected to her Nova Scotian heritage.
The film will be followed by a talkback with director John D. Scott and Alice Quinn, former poetry editor for The New Yorker and former Executive Director at the Poetry Society of America.
