anti-racism Immigrant Services Justice Initiatives

Justice Initiatives at BPL is partnering with community organizations and agencies to produce a series of Know Your Rights workshops. This event in the series will focus on:

  • The current political climate related to ICE policing;
  • How ICE operates, including common ICE tactics in New York;
  • Your rights when interacting with ICE at home, in public places, and during car stops;
  • What to do if you witness an encounter with ICE.

Partners: The Immigrant Defense Project (IDP) was founded 20 years ago to combat an emerging human rights crisis: the targeting of immigrants for mass imprisonment and deportation. As this crisis has continued to escalate, IDP has remained steadfast in fighting for fairness and justice for all immigrants caught at the intersection of the racially biased U.S. criminal and immigration systems. IDP fights to end the current era of unprecedented mass criminalization, detention and deportation through a multipronged strategy including advocacy, litigation, legal advice and training, community defense, grassroots alliances, and strategic communications.

BPL’s Immigrant Services offers programs for immigrants in multiple languages. From citizenship classes to English conversation groups, family cultural events and adult literacy courses, BPL's branches are welcoming spaces for all Brooklynites.

Presenter: Genia Blaser is a Senior Staff Attorney at the Immigrant Defense Project where she leads IDP’s ICE raids monitoring team, which keeps track of and shares trends and tactics of ICE community arrests.  She also works as part of IDP’s Padilla Support Center where she advises defense attorneys on the immigration consequences of criminal cases and provides trainings on the overlap of criminal-immigration systems. Prior to her work at IDP, Genia worked for almost four years in the immigration practice at The Bronx Defenders.

The event will be livestreamed on BPL's YouTube channel and on this event page. A Q&A session will be available via the livestream chat. Please register to receive information about Justice Initiatives programming.
