Jazz: An American Creation is part musical performance, part history lesson. This program delves into the origins of Jazz in New Orleans in the late 19th Century and goes on to explore how it became a global phenomenon as African Americans migrated northward from the Southern United States and brought their music with them. Included in the performance will be brief descriptions of the contributions of Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, Antonio Carlos Jobim, and Grover Washington accompanied by performances of songs made famous by these artists. The presentation will conclude with a ten-to-fifteen-minute Q & A.
Jazz guitarist Richie Nick is a member of the East Flatbush Community, a musician, and a retired schoolteacher who taught music at NYC public schools for decades. You can find his music and videos online via all major outlets.
