Course description:

Receive an introduction to philanthropy, the world of private foundations and Candid resources. Learn what current data reveals about private contributions in the U.S. by source (individuals, foundations, corporations and bequests). Become knowledgeable about the different types of private foundations and what motivates foundations to give to nonprofits.

Learn what funders are looking for in successful nonprofit organizations. Receive tips on how to do prospect research on foundations and corporations using Foundation Directory Online (FDO) in the SST Division @BPL.

Candid (candid.org) is a 501C3 nonprofit organization created when Foundation Center and GuideStar (guidestar.org) joined forces in 2019. Candid’s mission is to get you the information you need to do good. Candid provides data, knowledge and training on private foundations in the U.S. and around the world, and the work of U.S. nonprofit organizations. As a Candid Funding Information Network partner, the SST Division @BPL provides the public with access to Foundation Directory Online (FDO) Professional and Grants to Individuals Online, two of Candid’s foundation fundraising databases. Additionally, library visitors can visit the Central Library to find print resources on foundation, corporate and government funding, proposal writing, and nonprofit management.
