BPL Outdoors BPL Presents music poetry


Join us for an evening of intergalactic sounds, cosmic poetry, and starlit solidarity on the Plaza. Hala AlyanTahani Salah, and Tariq Luthun offer poems as illumination for community and action. DJ Shirine weaves us a portal with radical musical selections from Palestine and the region.

Hala Alyan is the author of the novel Salt Houses, winner of the Dayton Literary Peace Prize and the Arab American Book Award and a finalist for the Chautauqua Prize, as well as the recently published novel The Arsonists' City and four award-winning collections of poetry, most recently The Twenty-Ninth Year.

Tahani Salah is a poet, performer, educator, and activist from Brooklyn, with a bloodline to Palestine. She has performed at prestigious theaters and universities across the globe. 

Tariq Luthun is a Detroit-born, Dearborn-raised community organizer, data consultant, and Emmy Award-winning poet.The son of Palestinian Muslim immigrants from Gaza, he is a Kresge Arts in Detroit fellow that earned his MFA in Poetry from the Program for Writers at Warren Wilson College.

Shirine Saad is a Beirut-born multimedia storyteller, programmer and DJ focusing on culture and social change. She is joining Brown University’s Arts Initiative to teach Arts Journalism and Criticism.

Decolonize This Place is an action-oriented movement and decolonize formation in New York City and beyond. Facilitated by MTL+, DTP consists of over 30 collaborators, consisting of grassroots groups and art collectives that seek to resist, unsettle, and reclaim the city.

Within Our Lifetime is a Palestinian community organization building the revolutionary movement in pursuit of Palestinian liberation and in solidarity with all oppressed people resisting imperialism and colonialism around the world.

Mil Mundos Books primary mission is to remain dedicated to larger-scale anti-gentrification work in eastern Bushwick and beyond, and to maintain a curation and space that celebrates Black, Latinx and Indigenous heritage and supports the narratives of these cultures.

Fares "Freddy" Zeideia is the Falafel King of Astoria, Queens.  Zeideia, originally from a village outside Ramallah in the West Bank started his first food cart in Astoria 2002, won the Vendy Award for New York’s Best Street Food in 2010. The King of Falafel food truck will be parked outside of the plaza. Please note: food cannot be eaten inside the event area, but is welcome on the steps of the plaza and in the perimeter.
