Genealogy Workshop: Researching Your Family's Roots at the Center for Brooklyn History
Are you curious about researching your family's history, but don't know where to start? Have you watched television programs about exploring your roots, and wondered what a deep dive into your own family history might reveal? Have you always wanted to find the historical evidence behind the family stories you grew up hearing?
Join us on Wednesday, April 30th at 6:30pm at the Center for Brooklyn History for an introductory workshop on researching your family's history. The workshop will be led by Stacey Bell, President of the Jean Sampson Scott New York Chapter of the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society. Stacey will share the sources and methods that professional genealogists use to trace their ancestry and identify their family's history in the historical record.
CBH library staff will be on hand to demonstrate how anyone can access online databases, helpful readings, and more information using the resources available at the Center for Brooklyn History. And CBH historian Dominique Jean-Louis will provide an overview of how genealogical research makes important contributions to the field of history, including history exhibitions like Trace/s: Family History Research and the Legacy of Slavery in Brooklyn, which will be open during the evening's event.
This program takes place in CBH’s landmark Othmer Reading Room. Space is limited. Please register only if you are planning to attend.
The Center for Brooklyn History will be holding additional monthly genealogy workshops throughout the spring and summer- please check our website for the full updated list of dates and locations.
