first five years LGBTQ parents and caregivers ready set kindergarten

Is it important to your family to be active LGBTQ allies? Is your preschooler gender expansive, or do you want to support gender-expansive kids at your school? Do your kids have queer and trans friends that might need help feeling affirmed and safe at school? Are you part of a school PTO? Join Gender Inclusive Schools and Welcoming Schools at Brooklyn Public Library for our “Family Allyship Workshop"!

This 90-minute virtual interactive training will provide resources on teaching your kids about S.O.G.I.E (sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression), organizing family diversity events, advocating for LGBTQ-inclusive policies and training for school staff, practicing concrete language your family can use to interrupt bias-based behaviors in community settings. Learn about children's books and early literacy events that support and reflect gender-expansive children. Every participant will leave with a wealth of resources to share with the members of your school community!

Geared toward parents and caregivers of young children, in grades 3K, Pre-K, Kindergarten, and grades 1-3.

Speaker Bio Dave Edwards, PhD (ABD), MAT, has served as a teacher and administrator in multiple school districts across the country. He has held full-time faculty positions in the teacher preparation programs at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities and Hamline University. As the founder of Gender Inclusive Schools, and a Welcoming Schools national facilitator, Dave provides whole-staff training and consultation to wide-ranging audiences across the United States and Canada. Over the last 3 years, he has trained and supported educators in over 200 different school districts and independent schools! Dave serves on the board of the Minnesota Transgender Health Coalition and his family is heavily involved with Transforming Families MN, an organization that supports families/caregivers with gender-expansive children. As a parent advocate, Dave has been quoted in national publications such as the New York Times, NBC News, and Rolling Stone. Dave and his wife Hannah were recognized with the 2019 Ann Kaner-Roth Ally for Equality Award by the Human Rights Campaign.

This parent workshop is supported by the City's First Readers Initiative of the NY City Council.
