It's 1971 NYC.  Meet Gerry, a sanitation worker who has a soft spot for finding treasures in the trash.  While others mock Gerry, he finds beauty and joy in these objects.  When his oldest son is drafted to Vietnam, these treasures become a magical way for Gerry and his younger child to find hope and share it with the entire community.

Told with Bunraku style puppetry this excerpt will be followed by a puppet making workshop. No experience necessary. Materials provided.

This program is part of City of Trash, a puppet performance and experience  for young audiences that makes visible the invisible work of sanitation, honoring sanitation professionals who keep society healthy and safe.

Grand Pistachio creates original theater for young people utilizing larger than life forms of puppetry, mask, and music.  Our mission is to engage audience empathy and open new ways for young people to view each other,  the world, and their role in it.

(Rain location: Dweck Center)

City of Trash is sponsored, in part, by the Greater New York Arts Development Fund of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, administered by Brooklyn Arts Council.  City of Trash is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.

Events for Youth & Families programs are made possible through generous support from the Estate of Pearl S. Reuillard in memory of her parents Yetta and Louis Schwartz.
