Early Childhood Educator Series: ABC's of Racism with Little Uprisings (CTLE 1.5)
The Brooklyn Public Library Early Childhood Educator Series is an annual professional development series for early childhood educators, including everyone who works with young children from childcare providers to NYS Certified teachers, who receive free CTLE credits for attending. We explore topics chosen by educators in our communities that are not often included in teacher training programs.
About the Workshop:
Kids notice a lot about the world – including race, ethnicity, inequity, and injustice. They sense that these things matter, and they have questions. Have you had a kid say something about race and you did not know how to respond? Or did you respond in a way that you knew it could have been better? Do you have regular conversations with your children and are looking to further hone your racial justice best practices? The ABCs of Racism is a workshop designed by Little Uprisings for teachers and caregivers looking for strategies for starting, continuing or having more advanced conversations with children about racism grounded in children's literature. In this workshop, we will introduce a culturally responsive framework to support the development of critical questions and the implementation of genuine and culturally responsive conversations with peers and children in early childhood settings. As a community, we will learn how conversations about racism with kids can ( and should) center joy, marginalized narratives, and racial justice values.
About Us:
Little Uprisings is an organization focused on centering racial justice and liberation with kids and their caregiving allies. Little Uprisings’ mission --be it in schools with teachers developing culturally relevant curricula, in a community center with children talking about gentrification or helping parents develop their own values about racial justice, --is actively anti-racist, joyful, and Black-affirming and steadfastly focused on our collective liberation. Little Uprisings is founded by Tanya Nixon-Silberg (she/her), who is a Black mother, artist, educator, and facilitator, and is Co-facilitated by Octavia Nixon (she/her) who is a former Boston Public School teacher, educational coach, and state partnership curriculum developer.
