In this course, we focus each week on a different theme, central to our lived experience of the world. Instructor Ari Satok starts each class by bringing in a piece of writing for us to read and discuss. He then introduces the weekly theme and provides various quotes, cartoons, and other artistic reflections on that theme to spark discussion among the group. The discussion is followed by a short writing lesson, after which participants are assigned a prompt to write on, focused on their personal experiences. Participants write on the prompt and have ample opportunities to share their writing out loud with fellow classmates. Through this workshop, participants write beautiful pieces about their lives, while also building community with each other as they learn from each other’s stories and wisdom.

Supplies: Paper and pencil/pen.

Creative Aging programs at BPL are made possible with support from The Sills Family Foundation; Lifetime Arts with a grant from The Fan Fox and Leslie R. Samuels Foundation; Apple Bank, celebrating over 25 years in Brooklyn and 160 years of neighborhood banking in greater New York (Visit applebank.com for more information); and several BPL Friends Groups, Private Funders, and Volunteers.
