In Japanese and many Asian cultures, the crane is a mystical creature and is believed to live for a thousand years. The crane represents good fortune and longevity. It has also become a symbol of hope and healing during challenging times.
Japanese legend promises that anyone who folds 1000 origami cranes will be granted a wish by the gods. A thousand paper cranes are often given to a person who is ill, to wish for their recovery. They are usually created by friends, classmates, or colleagues as a collective effort. Paper cranes represent your wishes to the people who have been given away. Each paper crane carries a little wish and eventually becomes a big wish.
In an effort to support the recovery of our community, the library invites everyone to participate in this activity to create paper cranes together to promote a sense of solidarity and resilience during these times.
Greenpoint Library is currently accepting origami crane paper donations for our Covid Remembrance Month display. Fold a paper crane at home and drop off at information desk.
