Colloquy 6: Latin American Poetry in Translation
Brooklyn Public Library, in collaboration with World Poetry Books, Quantum Prose, and Belladonna* present Colloquy #6: Latin American Poetry in Translation, an evening of readings and conversation celebrating new books by Lila Zemborain translated by Christopher Winks, Jeannette L. Clariond translated by Samantha Schnee, and Ennio Moltedo translated by Marguerite Feitlowitz. The event will be recorded for broadcast by Montez Press Radio.
Participants
Jeannette L. Clariond is the author of fifteen collections of poetry in Spanish. Goddesses of Water is the sixth of her books to be translated into English; the others are March 10, NY; Image of Absence; Desert Memory; All Before Nightfall; The Movements of Water. Her poetry has also been translated into Italian, Arabic, French, Romanian and Portuguese. Her poems were performed as cantatas at the National Music Hall of Spain and Goddesses of Water has been performed as a dance at the Teatros de Canal in Madrid. She received the Juan Ramón Jiménez Prize for International Poetry for Sobre la fronda y la medida. She has translated the complete works of Elizabeth Bishop and Primo Levi into Spanish and is a member of both Mexico’s Sistema Nacional de Creadores and the North American Academy of the Spanish Language. She is the founder of Vaso Roto, a Spanish-language publisher of world poetry based in Mexico.
Marguerite Feitlowitz’s translation of Ennio Moltedo’s Night (World Poetry, 2022) was supported by an NEA Translation Fellowship. Feitlowitz has published five volumes of translations from French and Spanish, including Small Bibles for Bad Times: Selected Prose and Poetry by Liliane Atlan (2021), Pillar of Salt: An Autobiography with Nineteen Erotic Sonnets, by Salvador Novo, and two volumes of plays by Griselda Gambaro. She is the author of the internationally acclaimed A Lexicon of Terror: Argentina and the Legacies of Torture. Feitlowitz has held two Fulbright Fellowships to Argentina (including a Senior Scholar Award), a Bunting Fellowship in nonfiction, and a Harvard Faculty Research Grant. At Bennington, she has taught literature, writing, and literary translation since 2002, and is the founding director of Bennington Translates, which brings acclaimed literary, humanitarian, and scholarly translators to campus, and sponsors (M)othertongues, a student-created website publishing multilingual, multicultural literary, art and performance pieces.
Samantha Schnee is the founding editor of Words Without Borders. Her translation of Jeannette Clariond’s Goddesses of Water was published by World Poetry Editions in September and selected for the Academy of American Poets’ 2022 Featured Fall Books. Her translation of Carmen Boullosa's Texas: The Great Theft was shortlisted for the PEN America Translation Prize in 2015 and her translation of Boullosa’s El libro de Eva, which was shortlisted for the Mario Vargas Llosa Biennial Novel Prize, is published by Deep Vellum this month. She received a 2023 NEA Literature Fellowship to translate Boullosa’s novel El complot de los románticos.
Christopher Winks is Associate Professor and Chair of Comparative Literature at Queens College/CUNY. His most recent translations include Labyrinth: Selected Poetry and Prose of Lorenzo García Vega (Station Hill Press, forthcoming 2023) and Lila Zemborain's Soft Matter (Quantum Prose, 2022). He is currently working on translations of the Haitian surrealist poet Magloire Saint-Aude.
Argentinian poet Lila Zemborain is the author of nine poetry collections, compiled in Buenos Aires as Matrix Lux. Poesía reunida 1989-2019, three of which have been published in English, Mauve Sea-Orchids (Belladonna Books, 2007) and Guardians of the Secret (Noemi Press, 2009) and recently Soft Matter (Quantum Prose, 2022), translated by Christopher Winks. The poetry collection Matrix Lux, translated by Lorenzo Bueno, is forthcoming from Belladonna* next Fall. Since 2004 she has curated the KJCC Poetry Series at NYU, where she has directed the MFA in Creative Writing in Spanish and continues to teach. In 2007 she was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship for poetry for her project Las postales de Hitler, still unpublished.
