The Center for Black Literature at Medgar Evers College presents Willie Perdomo and Friends
The Center for Black Literature, in partnership with Brooklyn Public Library, celebrates 2019 National Poetry Month with Willie Perdomo, author of the forthcoming collection The Crazy Bunch and The Essential Hits of Shorty Bon Bon, which was a National Book Critics Circle 2014 Finalist for Poetry.
Poets Nicole Sealey and Rico Frederick will join Perdomo for an evening of readings and a discussion.
Willie Perdomo is a Puerto Rican poet and children’s book author. He is the author of The Essential Hits of Shorty Bon Bon (Penguin Poets, 2014), a National Book Critics Circle Awards finalist, Where a Nickel Costs a Dime (W. W. Norton & Company, a Poetry Society of America Norma Farber First Book Award finalist, 1996), Postcards of El Barrio (Isla Negra Press, 2002), and Smoking Lovely (Rattapallax Press, 2003), which received a PEN Beyond Margins Award. His children’s book, Visiting Langston, received the Coretta Scott King Honor. Perdomo was also the recipient of a New York Foundation for the Arts Poetry Fellowship in 2001 and 2009. He is a Pushcart Prize nominee, and recently was a Woolrich Fellow in Creative Writing at Columbia University. He is co-founder/publisher of Cypher Books, a VONA/Voices faculty member, and is currently an instructor in English at Phillips Exeter Academy. He is married to Emmy Award-winning journalist and writer, Sandra Guzman.
Born in St. Thomas, U.S.V.I., and raised in Apopka, Florida, Nicole Sealey is the author of Ordinary Beast and The Animal After Whom Other Animals Are Named, winner of the 2015 Drinking Gourd Chapbook Poetry Prize. Her other honors include an Elizabeth George Foundation Grant, the Stanley Kunitz Memorial Prize from The American Poetry Review, a Daniel Varoujan Award and the Poetry International Prize, as well as fellowships from CantoMundo, Cave Canem, MacDowell Colony and the Poetry Project. Her work has appeared in The New Yorker and elsewhere. Nicole holds an MLA in Africana Studies from the University of South Florida and an MFA in creative writing from New York University. She is the executive director at Cave Canem Foundation.
Rico Frederick is an award-winning visual content designer with a recent graduate degree from Pratt Institute. Industry experience ranges from major imprints to global fashion brands as well as advertising agencies. Ten years successfully delivering dynamic projects which activate emotion and intellect to transform creativity into unbound commercial and cultural campaigns.
