Juneteenth
Reading Room
June 19th is Juneteenth - also known as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, Liberation Day, or Emancipation Day - a holiday to commemorate the day in 1865 when the last enslaved people in the United States, in Galveston, Texas, found out that they were free. Brooklyn Public Library is celebrating the first year that this holiday is officially recognized by New York, city and state, with our Black American Library Card!
Stop by the sidewalk at Washington Irving library to design a personalized "library card" to celebrate your own heritage, borrow some books about Juneteenth or African-American culture and history, and just say hello!
All ages, no registration required.
