Drag history is New York history is American history, and on January 11 the Center for Brooklyn History brings you all three! Join us for an evening featuring readings from Elyssa Maxx Goodman’s new book Glitter and Concrete: A Cultural History of Drag in New York City, with drag performances by Brendan Germain, Xana Whoria, and Jupiter based on the book. The night continues with a conversation between author and drag artists about the importance of drag as a form of personal and artistic expression. Participants

Brendan Germain (they/them) is a New York based performer and writer. Their work primarily deconstructs and satirizes queer culture, employing drag, sketch, improv, poetry, dramatics and caricature. They explore the abstract and the mundane, all with a tinge of optimism. Instagram: @brendan.germain

Xana Whoria is a drag and tattoo artist in Brooklyn, New York. The first winner of the Untitled Art Star competition, Xana Whoria’s artwork is heavily inspired by Mexican culture. As she told Thotyssey’s Jim Silvestri, “Expect lots of references to Mexican folklore, and general works of art. I make my own props and gags, so a lot of my drag happens before I actually get onstage.” Instagram: @xanawhoria, @xanatattoos

Jupiter is a makeup artist, photographer, and drag creature based in NYC. His work blends the drama of drag with the otherworldly nature of sci-fi, fantasy, and horror. His work has been featured on RuPaul's Drag Race, World of Wonder, and Ben Nye. Instagram: @isthatjupiter

Elyssa Goodman is a writer and photographer specializing in arts and culture. Glitter and Concrete: A Cultural History of Drag in New York City is her first book. Her work has also been published in Vogue, The New York Times, Vanity Fair, and others online and in print. Elyssa has written about LGBTQ+ history and culture for Conde Nast’s them, where she was the site’s “Drag Herstory” and Queer Women's History columnist. She has been a freelance writer for 19 years and in love with drag for 27 years, since the age of seven. Instagram: @MissManhattanNY
