Cantastoria: By the Light of Man
Room: Grand Lobby, 1st Floor
America's oldest political theater troupe, The Bread & Puppet Theater was founded by Peter and Elka Schumann in New York's Lower East Side in 1963. Steeped in the Cheap Art movement and influenced heavily by Marxist political thought, the theater found its voice serving up lively and biting commentary on New York City's rent politics accompanied by fresh sourdough rye that Peter learned to bake from his mother as a refugee following World War II. Gaining international recognition for their work speaking out against the U.S. perpetrated atrocities in Vietnam, the Schumann's moved the theater to rural Vermont in the early 70's. Peter Schumann, now ninety, continues to feverishly sculpt, paint, write and direct new politically charged performances each summer in Glover, VT and around the world.
