Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra Performs The Juliet Letters
Join us as a quintet from the Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra performs The Juliet Letters, written by Elvis Costello.
The Juliet Letters came to be when Elvis Costello’s wife, at the time, pointed out a newspaper article about a Veronese academic who decided to reply to letters people sent to Juliet Capulet. Why people decided to write letters to the dead fictional tragic heroine, unknown. To this day, it's not certain how he got access to these letters, or if they are entirely fictitious. What we do know is the seed was sown for the creation of 20 idiosyncratic songs inspired by the concept of each song taking on a letter. Costello and members of the Brodsky Quartet came together to create a project of art songs drawing in elements of chamber music, jazz, and popular music stylings.
