Brooklyn Stories & Art: Presented by Author-Illustrator Javaka Steptoe

Center for Brooklyn History

arts and crafts Center for Brooklyn History Events for Youth and Family kids storytime

Award-winning author-illustrator Javaka Steptoe brings his powerful story of young Jean-Michel Basquiat to life in this interactive program.

Participants will learn about Javaka's creative process, enjoy a reading of "Radiant Child: The Story of Young Artist Jean-Michel Basquiat," and engage in discussion about art and self-expression.  See how the images in their book relate to the research library's special collections, archives, and historical treasures through a curated selection of materials that complement the story's themes.

Children will then create their own wearable paper crowns using construction paper, markers, colored pencils, and stickers, decorating them with personal symbols and words that represent their own artistic spirit - just like Basquiat's iconic crown motifs.

Copies of "Radiant Child: The Story of Young Artist Jean-Michel Basquiat" will be available for purchase at the event, and Javaka will personally sign all purchased books.
