Center for Brooklyn History

Black Brooklynites have resisted racism in housing, work, education, government, and other areas since the 17th Century Dutch New Netherlands colony. The Center for Brooklyn History's new curriculum, “Brooklyn Resists! How Black Brooklynites Resisted Racism and Persisted,” explores this long and ongoing history.

Join the Center for Brooklyn History and historian Brian Purnell at the Macon Library’s African American Heritage Center for the latest event in our Brooklyn Resists series: a talk about the history of Brooklyn’s chapter of the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE).

How did the Civil Rights and Black Power movements unfold in Brooklyn, New York? The Brooklyn chapter of the Congress of Racial Equality was one of the most dynamic CORE chapters in the country. It led protests and demonstrations against many different kinds of racial discrimination that affected life outside the South. In this presentation we will learn about Brooklyn CORE during the early 1960s, its campaigns against racial discrimination in Brooklyn, NY, and how the chapter evolved with its times during the Black Power era.

Brian Purnell is Associate Professor of Africana Studies and history at Bowdoin College in Maine. He is the writer and narrator of the Amazon Audible lecture series, The History of Brooklyn, and the author of the book, Fighting Jim Crow in the County of Kings: The Congress of Racial Equality in Brooklyn. He also co-edited a collection of historical essays called The Strange Careers of the Jim Crow North: Segregation and Struggle Outside of the South. Additionally, he has worked on several public history projects, including working as the lead historian for the Center of Brooklyn History's 2020 exhibit Brooklyn Resists! and that exhibit's accompanying education curriculum. Born and raised in Coney Island, he now lives in Brunswick, Maine, with his wife Leana and their four children.

Light hors d'oeuvres will be provided. Attendees are eligible for 1.5 CTLE credits.
