Join us for a virtual reading with Brooklyn Poets, featuring Carlie Hoffman, Michael Chang, and Adrian Matejka. This is an official 2021 Brooklyn Book Festival Bookend Event.
Carlie Hoffman is the author of This Alaska (Four Way Books, 2021). Her second collection is forthcoming with Four Way Books in 2023. A poet and translator, her honors include a 92Y Discovery Poetry Prize and a Poet’s & Writers Amy Award. Carlie teaches for Brooklyn Poets and is an instructor of creative writing at Purchase College–SUNY. She is the founder and editor-in-chief of Small Orange Journal.
A Brooklyn Poets fellow, Michael Chang is the author of several collections of poetry, including Drakkar Noir (winner of the Bateau Press BOOM Chapbook Contest), Chinatown Romeo (Ursus Americanus Press, 2021) and Boyfriend Perspective (Really Serious Literature, 2021). They have been tapped to edit Lambda Literary’s Emerge anthology, and their poems have been nominated for the Best New Poets, Best of the Net, and Pushcart Prize anthologies. In 2021, they were awarded the Poetry Project’s prestigious Brannan Prize.
Adrian Matejka is the author of The Devil’s Garden (Alice James Books, 2003), which won the New York/New England Award, Mixology (Penguin, 2009), a winner of the 2008 National Poetry Series, and The Big Smoke (Penguin, 2013), which was awarded the 2014 Anisfield-Wolf Book Award and was a finalist for the 2013 National Book Award, 2014 Hurston/Wright Legacy Award and 2014 Pulitzer Prize in poetry. Further books include the poetry collections Map to the Stars (Penguin, 2017) and Somebody Else Sold the World (Penguin, 2021), as well as Standing on the Verge & Maggot Brain (Third Man Books, 2021), a mixed media collection inspired by Funkadelic. The graphic novel Last On His Feet is forthcoming from Liveright in 2022. Matejka has received the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana Authors Award as well as fellowships from the Academy of American Poets, Guggenheim Foundation, Lannan Foundation, National Endowment for the Arts, Rockefeller Foundation and United States Artists. He is the Ruth Lilly Professor of Poetry at Indiana University Bloomington and served as Poet Laureate of the state of Indiana in 2018–19.
