Book Discussion: My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante

book discussion
The first of Elena Ferrante's quartet of Neapolitan novels, My Brilliant Friend is up next in our discussion series. It follows the lives of two friends, Elena and Lila, who grow up in a working class neighborhood near Naples in the 1950s. It details a deeply traditional, working class environment that is resistant to change, whose inhabitants’ lives are deeply entangled and where the threat of violence is ubiquitous. Acclaimed by readers and critics alike both for the gorgeousness of its prose and its unique depiction of female friendship, My Brilliant Friend is clearly one of the most talked about books of the era. Whether you are an existing devotee or this is your first time engaging with the book, I look forward to hearing your thoughts.
Reserve a special Discussion Sets copy of the novel, or pick one up on display in the Language and Literature division. Click here for more information about the Discussion Sets collection.

Finished the book early, why not read ahead to The Story of a New Name, book two of the Neapolitan novels. Or for another beautifully written take on female friendship try Sula by Toni Morrison. Have a suggestion for our next discussion? Email me ebobilin@bklynlibrary.org!
