book discussion
For Black History Month, come to the Red Hook library for a book discussion of Kaitlyn Greenidge's 2021 novel LIBERTIE, about a young Black woman growing up in post-Civil War Brooklyn. Raised by her strong and ambitious mother, the first Black woman doctor in New York (based on the real life figure of Susan Smith McKinney Steward), Libertie is expected to follow in her footsteps and become a doctor as well. But Libertie is determined to follow her own path, one that leads her far from Brooklyn as she struggles to find a way for a Black woman to be truly free.
Copies of the book are available for checkout at the Red Hook information desk - all are welcome to read and discuss!
