author talks book club book discussion Chinese Lunar New Year

Did you ever wonder how China went from poor to rich so quickly? Or try to imagine what it would be like to be a foreign correspondent?

In her memoir, When the Red Gates Opened, Dori Jones Yang tells her personal story of how she as a young American woman learned how to cover a huge country as it started its journey to modernization--and met and married a Chinese man, whose family let her see China from the inside.

"Dori Jones Yang’s memoir is an enthralling account of her love affair with China that’s replete with drama, disappointment, progress, and hope. Vibrant details of the settings couple with recreated conversations; at points, the book reads like a novel."  - Foreword Reviews
